At the time of this writng there is no Ohio State University Culinary Arts Program although they do have programs available in Food Business Management, Food Science and Technology and Hospitality Management.

The Food Science and Technology degree is meant to prepare students for a career in either the public or private sector and focuses on the processing, storage and distribution of food as well as food safety and nutrition.

The degree in Food Business Management is focused on the production and distribution of foods and focuses on economics, marketing and business aspects of the food industry.

The degree in Hospitality Management prepares student for all aspects of the management of restaurants, hotel kitchens, institutional kitchens and convention centers. It focuses not only on food service, but also on business administration and management aspects of the food service industry.

All three degrees will prepare students for different career paths in the food service industry, not the culinary arts.

With all of that in mind, there are plans being laid at OSU for a dual institute degree in conjunction with Central Ohio Technical College (COTC), similar to the one currently in place at the University of Cincinnati.

As of 2008 preliminary approval requests have been under consideration at both Ohio State University and Central Ohio Technical College. The degree is planned to be focused on both the culinary arts and the technical aspects of food preparation and will train graduates to use both their creative culinary skills along with technical knowledge of food to create unique and innovative new products for retail and large scale food service operations.

Prospective titles for graduates would be product development scientist, product development chef, research chef, R&D chef, or corporate chef. For more information about the proposed Ohio State University Culinary Arts Program please contact Rich Linton, Professor and Chair, Department of Food Science and Technology, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210

Students will be taught the lesson and then demonstrate it on their own with the supervision of the head chef. The instructor will make sure you perform every step correctly. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive one on one attention. In addition to time in the classroom, there may also be assignments that are to be completed and submitted online.

During the course, students will learn essential culinary skills, such as properly preparing meats, pastry, beverages and kitchen sanitation. They will also learn valuable skills outside the kitchen like opening a restaurant and the business aspects of making it profitable.

Upon completion of the course and earning your degree, the institute may offer internship opportunities.

Those living in or near Cincinnati and interested in taking up instruction in the culinary arts have a unique opportunity since the implementation in 2004 of the dual institute applied science program at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (CSTCC).

Students begin there instruction at CSTCC and after 2 years receive an associates degree in culinary arts and science and then they move on for a final 2 years at the University of Cincinnati Culinary Arts Program after which they receive a bachelors degree in culinary arts and science. It is the very first program of this kind in Ohio and has become quite popular among budding Ohio culinary arts professionals.

The unique program is geared towards total immersion in the culinary arts as well as offering a broad education in food science and technology. This combination turns out well rounded graduates with advanced knowledge of all aspects of the culinary arts.

The initial 2 years spent at CSTCC focus on all three aspects of restaurant or institutional culinary arts, food preparation, professional service and restaurant management. After transitioning to the University of Cincinnati students then focus on the science of food. Courses include manufacture of quality foods, product development, food processing techniques and shelf life of foods.

The dual institution curriculum was designed to prepare students for careers in all areas of the food service industry from restaurants to large scale production facilities. Other possibilities include research and development, institutional food service and food design careers.

The University of Cincinnati Culinary Arts Program is interesting in its unique blend of schools as well as the unique blend of education, combining core food science and technology with core culinary arts skills. This combination leads to very well rounded and knowledgeable graduates who are ready to take on any challenges the food service industry can dish up.

There are many people who have discovered the satisfaction and creativity that can come from a career in the field of culinary arts. If you have ever considered the various opportunities in this exciting field, you might want to think about some of the culinary schools located in your area; however, many students travel out of state to get a great start in their career, so this is an option that should not necessarily be ruled out. Finding a culinary school is one of the first things you will want to do as you explore the many career options available in the field of culinary arts.

While it can be common for people to automatically consider a career as a baker or chef, there are plenty of other wonderful ways to enjoy the diverse career choices that a diploma from a culinary school can provide. For example, many schools offer programs in management or hospitality; whether you choose to complete these training programs in conjunction with your other culinary arts program, or you are looking solely for a career in running a restaurant or hotel, they can certainly add to the depth and breadth of career opportunities available in this very rewarding field.

The Art Institute of Ohio in Cincinnati

For anyone who is looking for culinary schools in Ohio, there are certainly many great choices. For example, the Art Institute of Ohio in Cincinnati offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in the Culinary Arts, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Culinary Management, as well as diploma programs for both Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry. These programs ensure that students have a wide range of career choices when they complete their training at this superb school.

The Columbus Culinary Institute

The Columbus Culinary Institute also offers an excellent opportunity to complete your education in the culinary arts. Their twenty month program is designed to teach students essential knife skills as well as help them master a wide variety of dishes and cooking techniques ranging from basic skills to advanced techniques. Classes are taught by chef-instructors who present the material through demonstrations given in class. This gives students an opportunity to ask questions while viewing exactly how to execute the specific skill or dish being taught. Once the presentation is completed, students then have their own turn to create the dish. Hands-on training is essential in the culinary arts and at the Columbus Culinary Institute students are in the kitchen right from the very beginning of their training program.

In addition to these great cooking schools, Ohio also offers many state and community colleges with programs in the field of Culinary Arts. These schools are located throughout the state of Ohio and are conveniently located for most residents.

Finding great culinary arts schools in Ohio may be an intimidating thing to do, as the options and possibilities are endless. This is due to the fact that the culinary world has been one of the steadily growing industries today. As a matter of fact, this industry is considered to be one of the highest contributors to the overall Gross Domestic Product in the country because it boosts the tourist population in one area.

For those who have to work under a budget, going to state university might be the best option. These schools help their students to master the local cuisine, while at the same time opening them to the different doors of the culinary world. Another thing that sets it apart from other institutions is its hands on training to students. It has its own pastry store and small café that employs students, and is one of its income generating activities.

Ohio State University Culinary Arts Program

The Ohio State University Culinary Arts Program for example boasts of its wide network of partner restaurants in major metro areas such as Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Their programs focus on trainings as a pastry, station, and entry-level sous chef. With this institution, everyone is guaranteed to have endless possibilities in being a successful chef.

University of Cincinnati and Lakeland Community College

The University of Cincinnati and Lakeland Community College culinary arts program are equally amazing options to train and study on how to be a great cook. Aside from the culinary diploma, students will be adequately trained in the areas of hospitality management. Additionally, these institutions boast including the post-modernist way of cooking, which is the deconstruction of food. This includes gastronomic sciences and the latest technologies and techniques to play with an ingredient’s original taste and texture to take food it into greater heights. Finally, people will be very happy to know that the program does not have to be a full-blown 4-year course. Rather, it can just take as short as 20 months. This gives time to students to end school early and jumpstart their career at the soonest possible time. In the end, everyone’s culinary dream is closer to reality than it seems.

Cooking Schools and Pursuing a Degree or Diploma

Fortunately, with the wide selection of cooking schools now available, students interested in pursuing a degree or diploma program in this exciting field can find a place to train that will meet both their educational goals as well as their budget needs. However, even if money is tight, many schools offer financial aid packages that can help you achieve your goals. Today’s cooking schools offer students flexibility, convenience and the ability to help finance their education. The perfect combination to the start of a rewarding career.
